Since its premiere in 1995, the classic anime 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' has left a profound impact on the anime and fashion design industries with its unique visual aesthetics, abstract psychological portrayals, and extensive use of special symbols. To reciprocate the love from fans and introduce new anime enthusiasts to its charm, Trendic International Limited is proud to announce that the 'Lines of EVANGELION' exhibition will be held in Hong Kong from 23 May to 12 July at the basement level 2 of INCUBASE Arena in Mong Kok. The exhibition of precious drafts, which first toured in Seoul, South Korea, and garnered immense attention, will now be presented in Hong Kong for the first time, allowing local fans to appreciate the creative allure of this masterpiece up close.
Focusing on 'Lines': Exploring the Exquisite Craft of the Creators
The title of this exhibition, 'Lines', centers on the fundamental element that constitutes the world of the 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' series: lines. From the contours of the characters and the intricate structures of the mecha to the iconic typography, including its distinctive Ming-style font, the exhibition artistically reinterprets these visual elements, inviting viewers to appreciate the intricate details that form the grand and immersive universe of 'Neon Genesis Evangelion'
The exhibition will showcase over 500 precious draft drawings. These drafts meticulously capture the grand dynamics of mecha battles, the subtle changes in character emotions, and the crucial moments of decisive battles with the Angels. Every stroke embodies the creative spirit and artistic legacy of Hideaki Anno and his team. The exhibition transcends language and cultural barriers, offering a re-experience of the grand and profound world of 'Neon Genesis Evangelion'
Five Highlights: Unveiling the Creative Depth from Drafts to Cel Animation
The exhibition features a curated selection of artwork that provides a comprehensive understanding of the production process of EVANGELION:
Highlight 1: Animator's Hand-Drawn Drafts (Key Animation Drawing): Displaying key frame original drafts of main characters such as Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami, and Asuka Langley. Visitors can clearly observe the pencil-drawn contour lines, traces of correction fluid, and color-layering sketches. Detailed structural drafts of mecha like Evangelion Unit-01 and Unit-00 are also exhibited, revealing the origins of the complex geometric lines and mechanical aesthetics of the mecha designs.
Highlight 2: Nostalgic Cel Animation and Background Art: Featuring hand-drawn cel animation films used during the theatrical release, showcasing how artisans meticulously layered lines and colors. Some background art displays the urban landscape of the Third New Tokyo City or the ruins after Angel attacks, creating a unique sense of spatial oppression through intricate line arrangements.
Highlight 3: Digital and Hand-Drawn Art from the Original Series: Exhibiting a large number of layout drawings from the 'Rebuild of Evangelion' series, which are crucial in animation production as they determine camera angles and the spatial proportions of characters and backgrounds. The edges of these drawings also contain modification notes from the director or animation supervisor, offering a glimpse into the meticulous production process of Hideaki Anno's creative team.
Highlight 4: Immersive Exhibition Experience: The exhibition area combines modern art exhibition techniques, utilizing light and shadow, and spatial arrangement to create a unique atmosphere that blends the 'Rebuild of Evangelion' and 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' worlds. Certain classic line patterns are enlarged or transformed into three-dimensional displays, and sketch-style character backdrop panels (including those of Shinji, Kaoru, and Mari) are set up for visitors to take memorable photos. Additionally, the exhibition pairs the artwork with corresponding digital image materials, showcasing the transformation of lines into the stunning animations seen on the big screen.
Highlight 5: Fan Easter Eggs, Hong Kong Original Illustrations, and Exclusive Merchandise: To enhance the exhibition experience, an interactive area is set up where fans are invited to use the provided fine ink and brushes to express their profound insights and unique interpretations of the work through dots and lines. During the exhibition, Hong Kong original illustrations infused with local sentiments will be displayed, delicately presenting the brilliant memories of EVANGELION characters in various unique settings of Hong Kong. A range of exclusive, thoughtfully designed Hong Kong-limited merchandise, including collaborative items with local elements, will be available for fans to bring home a unique memento of this exhibition. What's more, for every purchase of selected merchandise totaling $300 or more, you will receive a free blind box magnet sticker, bringing the unique memories of the exhibition into your daily life.
